Each citation consists of two parts:

1.     The in-text citation - provides very brief identifying information within the text

2.     The reference list - full identifying information about each source used.

How to Format In-Text Citations

An in-text citation consists of a number enclosed by square brackets:

Examples:
Fluoridated water as well as various fluoride products such as toothpaste provide fluoride ions necessary for remineralization [1].

Rakita [2] states that fluoridated water as well as various fluoride products such as toothpaste provide fluoride ions necessary for remineralization.

"Several recent studies [3], [4], [5], [6] have suggested that fluoride products such as toothpaste provide fluoride ions necessary for remineralization."


How to Format Reference Lists

Book - Single Author:
[1] B. Klaus, Robot Vision. Cambridge, MA, USA: MIT Press, 1986.

Book - 2-5 authors:
[2] B. Klaus, J.K. Smith, and P. Horn, Robot Vision. Cambridge, MA, USA: MIT Press, 1986.

Book - 6 or more authors:
[3] D.A. Evans, et al. Chemistry in America: Thinkers and Contributors. Boston, MA, USA: McGraw-Hill, 2015.

Edited Book:

Entry or Chapter in a Book:
