Do You Need to Register to Vote?


To vote in the November 2020 election in North Carolina you must meet these requirements:

  • A U.S. citizen
  • A resident of the NC county for at least 30 days before the election
  • 18 years old or older on Election Day. A 17-year-old may register and vote in the Primary if he or she will be 18 on the day of the General Election. Complete the regular voter registration form and submit it to your county Board of Elections
  • Not currently in state or federal prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony

Do I Need a Photo ID?

  • Voters will NOT be required to show photo ID for the March 3, 3030 primary election. A federal district court blocked North Carolina's photo ID requirement, and an injunction remains in place until further notice.
