How do I get a library card?

Library cards may be obtained in the library during library hours. Library cards are free for students, faculty, staff, and all NC residents. We will need to see a photo ID prior to issuing a library card. You may also send in a completed library card application form PDF or Word. Mail or fax to:

Surry Community College Library
630 South Main St.
Dobson, NC 27017

Fax: (336) 386-3692.

Your library card will be mailed to you at the address given on your application.

What if I lose my library card?

If you lose your library card, there is a fee of $3.00 to replace it.

How do I find materials?

Use the search box on the library homepage to search for materials. After your initial search, use the filters on the left side to select material type (article, book, etc.). From off-campus, you need to use your SCC username and password to authenticate into many subscription library resources.

What materials may I borrow, and for how long?

Students may check out up to 10 items, and up to two DVDs. Non-students may check out up to three items (no DVDs). Books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed once if no one is waiting for them. Any accrued fines must be paid before renewing. Overdue fines per day are 10¢ for books or CD and $1.00 per day for DVDs. Periodicals, newspapers, and reference and genealogy books may not be checked out.

How do I renew materials?

Books and CDs normally circulate for three weeks, and may be renewed one time if no one has reserved them. DVDs are not renewable.

Renewals may be made in person, by telephoning the library at (336) 386-3259, or by logging into your library account. You will need your library card number and PIN number when renewing online. Any accrued fines must be paid and the student's record cleared before items can be renewed.

What is your fine policy?

Fines are charged for materials which are returned after the due date. Books currently have a 3-day grace period before fines begin. However, once the grace period passes, fines accrue from the first day overdue.

Fine amounts range from .10 per day for books to $2.00 per day for videotapes. A person who owes fines or has overdue materials checked out will not be permitted to check out additional materials.

If a book or CD is lost, the borrower will be charged $40.00 per item, a $10.00 processing fee, and any fines which have accrued before the book is reported lost.

May I have materials held for me?

Yes. If an item is checked out, call the library at 336-386-3259 to have the item held for you. You MUST identify a valid library card number when placing the hold. We will notify you via email and/or phone when the item has been returned and hold it for pickup for 5 business days.

May I place a hold on an item online?

Online holds are possible for many items. First, locate the item you would like to place a hold on in the library catalog. If the item is currently available at Surry Community College, you may come pick up the item in the stacks. If the item is checked out or if you would like an item that is located at another library, click on the "Details" button located to the left of the item information. On the left side of the screen, click on the "Place Hold" link. If you are faculty/staff/NC resident, you should enter your 14-digit library card number in the User ID field. If you are a student, enter your 14-digit library card number in the Alternate ID field. You must also enter your 4-digit PIN number, which you set when you obtained your library card. Once you have entered this information, click the "Place Hold" button and a library staff member will contact you when the item arrives at the Surry Community College Library.

What are reserve materials?

Reserve materials for class assignments are sometimes placed at the library by instructors. Restrictions on the reserve materials are placed by the instructor; some items are for library use only (due back at the desk in 2 hours), while others may circulate for a periods ranging from one to seven days. The fine for reserve materials is $1.00 per day for books.

What are non-circulating materials?

Some materials are for library use only and may not be checked out. These include magazines, newspapers, reference books, and books from the Genealogy & Local History Collection.

What is interlibrary loan?

When a student or faculty member needs a book or article that is not available in our collection, it is sometimes possible to obtain the material from another library. You may request materials from other CCLINC (Community College Libraries In North Carolina) libraries through the menu in the library book catalog. If the item is not in the CCLINC system, there may be a charge from the lending library. The student is responsible for any charges associated with interlibrary loans he/she has requested. To request ILL, visit the ILL website or contact Sebrina Mabe at (336) 386-3459 or mabesc@surry.edu.
